THE GIANT MOUNTAINS
East
(Pec pod Snezkou, Trutnov)
Pec pod Snezkou
Pec pod Snezkou is known not only as a starting point for the climbing route to Snezka, the highest mountain in the Czech Republic, but also as an busy mountains resort, open both in summer and winter. Pec pod Snezkou benefits from its geographic position and its altitute (800 - 1602 m above sea level). The town came into existence at the end of the 16th century as a third part of Velka Upa. It was established to faciltate extensive timber felling to supply the silver mines at Kutna hora. The development of tourism in the second half of last century brought a new source of earning to the cottagers. Later they adaptet their cottages to let room. Mountain Snezka, became the main attraction together with skiing.
Trutnov
Trutnov is spread in the valley of Upa, the river, and on the adjacent hills in an amply forested area near Krkonose, the Giant Mountains. It is closed by the barrier of the Giant Mountains, the highest in the Czech Republic, with Snezka (1602 metres) their top peak in the horizon. Trutnov has 32 thousand inhabitants and lies 427 metres above sea level. A legend on foundation of the town, a fight between Trut, the knight, and a dragon, is shown in the National theatre in the lunette by Mikolas Ales and as well in the town emblem. In the blue blazon, there is a silver town gate with two towers, a furious green dragon at the front and a flying raven carrying a gold ring in its beak. That all symbolises treasures hidden in the Giant Mountains.
